For many plans there is a maximum amount that the insurer will pay per year and this can limit your maximum possible benefit. For example if you pay $20 per month and the plan has a maximum benefit of $1,000, the maximum true benefit would be $1,000 less the payments of $240.

Most of the dental insurance plans will include 2 checkups and cleanings per year. Some dental plans will also include 2 sets of x-rays per year. In some areas a cleaning, checkup, and x-rays is around $200 and doing this twice a year could easily mean that you would need to pay more for the insurance cost.

Dental insurance can also be a big help if you have a bigger problem, for example if you have had a lapse in dental insurance coverage and broke a tooth, then a crown may cost you around $950 but a crown with insurance may cost half of that amount.
